Definition of Explanation Text

Explanation text is a text to provide a clear explanation.

Usually, explanation text contains explanations about social, natural, or cultural phenomena. The purpose of writing this text is to tell the reader about how something works or why something happens.

The things described in the explanatory text are in the form of natural and social phenomena.

Explanation Text Structure

General statement
Provide an introduction to topics such as explanations of general information.

Explanation
Use paragraphs or statements that explain how or why something happened. Write down connections such as cause and effect or temporal sequence.

Closing
Contains a strong closing paragraph or sentence that brings together the general statement and previous explanation.

Characteristics of Explanation Text
  • Using the Simple Present Tense
Because this text describes the facts
  • Using Action Verbs
Action Verbs are verbs used to describe an action that takes place, for example, produces, enters, moves, and so on.
  • Using Passive Voices
The use of Passive Voices aims to emphasize the focus on the event that is taking place rather than the subject
  • Using Noun Phrases
examples of blue color in the sky, the roasted beans, a brief transient sound, and others.
  • Using Technical Terms
These technical terms refer to technical terms related to the topics discussed

Explanation Text Type

Writing an explanation text must have and seek a lot of knowledge before starting to write. There are several types of explanation text, namely:

The first is a text that describes an event or how something works. For example, how does the washing machine work, how does it rain and so on

The second is text that explains why something happened. For example, why are bats more active at night etc

The third is to explain the similarities and differences in objects. This type of text deals with the topic of science and technology in which the explanation of a natural or non-natural phenomenon occurs. For example how a tornado can form, why a tsunami can occur and so on

Language Feature Explanation Text

Explanation text has language features, namely:

  1. Using the present tense, because the explanation text discusses a fact.
  2. Using complex noun groups, it aims to build detailed descriptions for example, 'Threatening', 'Rampaging' or 'Enormous' and many more.
  3. Using abstract nouns such as 'heat', 'earthquakes', 'floods', and others.
  4. Use sentences with clear subjects and use the verb agreement.
  5. Using action verbs to explain the cause of the phenomenon under discussion such as 'from' or 'started from'.
  6. Use an adverbial phrase from a time and place to tell when and where the incident took place. For example. ‘Its is to be found in Sulawesi, Indonesia’.
  7. Use conjunctions to link time sequences in causal order. For example 'after', 'finally', 'so', 'then' and others.
  8. Using passive voice which is useful to emphasize the focus of the event that is taking place.
  9. Using time conjunctions, for example, 'when', 'as'. This time conjunction is to order and connect events so that the written text flows more (placed first in a sentence)
  10. Use technical terms or word chains about the subject.
