Narrative Text

At this time I will explain about the narrative text.Let's get started 

Definition of Narrative Text

Narrative text is one type of text that tells about a series of events chronologically and connected to each other. The nature of narrative text is imaginative or in the form of a fictional story (composition) which has the aim of entertaining the reader.

Types of Narrative Text

  • Fable

is a story about animals. For example, The Ugly Duckling, The Country of the Mice, A Bear and A Rabbit, The Cat and The Rat, The Greedy Monkey, A Fox and A Little Bird, The Mouse Deer and Crocodile and so on.

  • Myth

is a myth / myth that developed in society and is generally considered a factual story or actually happened. For example, Aji Saka and Dewata Cengkar.

  • Legend

is a story that tells about how the origin of a place. The Legend of Surabaya, The Legend of Prambanan Temple, Story of Lake Toba.

  • Folktale/ folklore/

is a story passed down from generation to generation to become part of the community tradition. For example Malin Kundang, Golden eggs.

  • Fairy tales

are folk tales or children's stories that have magic in the stories told by their authors. For example Timun Mas, Tinker Bell, Tumbelina.

  • Love story / romance

is a story that tells (generally) the love struggle of the main character or about the love story of the characters. For example, Romeo and Juliet, I'm One of Those Fool Man.

  • Personal experience

is a narrative text that contains the author's personal experience.

  • Slice of life

is a story that contains activities or stories that occur in the daily life of the author or imaginative character. For example True friends.

  • Horror stories

is a type of narrative text that tells generally scary stories such as ghosts or other astral beings.

  • Science fiction

is a story that tells about things related to science.

Narrative Text Characteristics

the characteristics of narrative text, following its characteristics.

  1. Narrative text tells about a story that happened in the past.

  2. Using nouns or nouns to replace the words animals, people, things in the story. For example the dwarfs, carriage and so on.

  3. Usually, they are stories that are already known by many people and developed in the community. Examples such as The Rabbit and The Turtle, Malin Kundang and so on.

  4. The elements of narrative text consist of setting time, place, story theme, characters, atmosphere, conflict and resolution.

  5. Arranged in a simple sequel or several complex sequels





Language Elements of Narrative Text

Narrative text also has linguistic elements or language features which consist of 7 elements as follows.

  1. Using the past tense, for example by using verb 3 such as killed, drunk, won, sent and others.

  2. Using the adverb of time or adverb of time, for example when, suddenly, before, until, soon.

  3. Using time conjunctions or time conjunctions, for example after, as soon as, then.

  4. Using specific characters, for example Aladin, Rapunzel, Cinderella.

  5. Action verbs or action verbs, for example walked, wrote, bought, talked.

  6. Using direct speech or direct sentences that use the present tense, for example Aladdin says, "she is the one"

  7. Using saying and thinking verbs or verbs that show speech, for example told, said, thought.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

  • Orientation

is the initial paragraph that contains the introduction of the characters involved in an event in the story. In addition, orientation contains the place of occurrence and the time of the story.

  • Complication

consists of paragraphs that explain the beginning of the event or occurrence. The beginning of the incident became a series of storylines which then continued to conflict, climax and anti-climax.

Complication consists of three conflicts, namely

  1. Natural conflict, natural or inter-universe conflict.

  2. Social conflict, conflict between characters or actors.

  3. Psychological conflict, inner conflict or self.

  • Resolution
is the final part of the story. As the name implies, the third structure of this narrative text contains a solution.

  • Re-orientation
Section is the closing of a story that is optional. Re-orientation can contain moral lessons, suggestions or teachings from the author.

Example of narrative text

Cinderella

Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Cinderella. She lived with her step mother and two step sisters. The step mother and her two daughters didn’t like Cinderella. They treated Cincerella very bad. Cinderella usually did the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing the floor, cleaning the pot and pan and preparing the food for the family, and so on.

One day, a ball was to be held by the royal family of the kingdom to find the Prince’s spouse. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball but her step mother asked her to stay at home and do the house works. Cinderella cried. Then there was a fairy godmother standing beside her.

“Why are you crying, Cinderella?”, the fairy godmother asked.

“Because I want to go to the ball but my step mother insists me to stay at home. Besides, I don’t have any beautiful dress” said Cinderella.

Then the fairy turned Cinderella’s ugly dress became the most beautiful dress and with beautiful slippers. The fairy also turned a pumpkin into a parking coach and the mice become six white horses. Cinderella fiinally could go to the ball but she had to come back before midnight before the spell ended.

At the ball, Cinderella amazed everybody there include the Prince. The Prince asked her to dance. Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball. But, all of a sudden, she heard the sound of a clock, the first stroke of midnight. Remembered what the fairy had said, Cinderella ran back to go home. But she lost one of her slippers in ballroom. The Prince picked up her slipper and would search for the girl whose foot fitted with the slipper.

A few days later, the Prince proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the slipper. Her step sisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard they squeezed their toes into it. In the end, the King’s solder let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.

Finally, she was driven to the palace. The Prince was overjoyed to see her again. They were married and live happily ever after.

  • Orientation

  • Resolution

In the end, the King’s solder let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.



Narrative Legend Text Question 1


Long, long ago, when the gods and goddesses used to mingle in the affairs of mortals, there was a small kingdom on the slope of Mount Wayang in West Java.  The King, named Sang Prabu, was a wise man.  He had an only daughter, called Princess Teja Nirmala, who was famous for her beauty but she was not married.  One day Sang Prabu made up his mind to settle the matter by a show of strength.
After that, Prince of Blambangan, named Raden Begawan had won the competition.  Unfortunately, the wicked fairy, Princess Segara fell in love with Raden Begawan and used magic power to render him unconscious and he forgot his wedding.  When Sang Prabu was searching, Raden Begawan saw him and soon realized that he had been enchanted by the wicked fairy.  The fairy could not accept this, so she killed Raden Begawan.  When Princess Teja Nirmala heard this, she was very sad.  So a nice fairy took her to the Kahyangan.

Narrative Legend Text Question 2

A long time ago, very few people lived in the New Territories.  There were only a few villages.  If the people wanted to go from one village to another, they often had to pass through wild and unsafe forest.
One day, a farmer’s young wife went to the next village to visit her own mother and brother.  She brought along her baby son.  When it was time for her to leave, her brother said “ it is getting dark.  Let my son, Ah Tim go with you though the forest.”
So Ah Tim led the way and the young woman followed behind, carrying her baby.  When they were in the forest, suddenly they saw a group of wolves.  They began to run to avoid the danger, but Ah Tim kicked against a stone and fell down.  At once the wolves caught him.  The young woman cried to the wolves, “ please eat my own son instead.” Then, she put her baby son on the ground in front of the wolves and took her nephew away.  Everyone understood that this was because the woman was very good and kind.  She had offered her own son’s life to save her nephew.
They ran back to the house and called for help.  All men in the village fetched thick sticks and went back with her into the forest.  When they got there, they saw something very strange.  Instead of eating the woman’s baby the wolves were playing with him.
